He was the Green Party candidate for Governor of New Mexico in 1994, receiving 10.4% of the vote (47,080 votes), and coming third, behind winner Gary Johnson and incumbent Democratic candidate Bruce King.
Prior to this, he served as Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico from 1971 to 1975 and from 1979 to 1983, and as a state representative.
Mondragon later returned to the Democratic Party.
New Mexico Gubernatorial Debate
Incumbent Governor King debated challengers Johnson and Mondragon on various campaign issues, including taxes and regulation of gambling on the reservations.
